This Girl Can Essex is a celebration of the active women who are doing their thing – no matter how they do it, how they look or how sweaty they get and its’ goal is to inspire more women and girls to participate in sport and physical activity.
Figures suggest that 1.75 million fewer UK women are active than men, despite over 70 per cent of 14-40 year-old women wanting to be more active. In Essex, for example, 30.7% of females currently take part in one 30-minute session of sport or physical activity per week, compared to 38% of males in Essex – and a national female average of 31.2% (figures taken from the Active People Survey 9, 2014/15). Furthermore, 60.8% of females in Essex don’t take part in any sport, compared to 49.8% of males in Essex – and a national female average of 59.3%. Reasons given for this lack of participation ranged from a concern about getting sweaty in front of other people to individuals believing that they were neither fit nor accomplished enough to participate. Even the word ‘sport’ has negative connotations for many women.
