We have had a fantastic response to our emergency Find Your Active fund. We have received over 300 applications and are now pausing the fund for the 12 Essex County Council areas (see list below) and for the unitary authority area of Southend. The fund will just remain open for the unitary authority area of Thurrock.

If you have a great project idea to get inactive people active, for any of the 12 Essex County Council areas or Southend, we would still like to hear about this. Please share your project idea here

12 Essex County Council areas:

Basildon, Braintree, Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Colchester, Epping Forest, Harlow, Maldon, Rochford, Tendring, Uttlesford

About the fund:

The fund is provided by Active Essex and Essex County Council, and supported by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Thurrock Council, to respond to the immediate challenges of engaging people who have become less physically active due to the pandemic. Any organisation from Essex can apply. The money can be used to start up new activities or increasing the numbers attending existing activities.

Please note that grants over £3,000 will be an exception. Most of the grants will be for projects that can start quickly, requiring money for coaches, instructors, venue hire, equipment, and promotion. We cannot fund major capital projects such as facilities, floodlighting, gyms, or multi-use games areas. We can fund equipment which will be used to enable deconditioned people to become active.

The fund is for organisations who are willing and able to take immediate action to reach people who have become less physically active since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. All activities will need to be completed by March 31st, 2022 or earlier. Applications that are focused on the key funding priorities below are more likely to receive an award.

Funding priorities:

We will prioritise applications that target people who have become physically deconditioned because of the pandemic. Key groups have been affected more than others by the pandemic, and we will prioritise applications that engage older people, children and young people, disabled people, people with long-term health conditions, women, ethnically diverse communities and people from lower socio-economic groups.

Who and what we will fund:

We can fund any organisation that can offer appropriate physical activity and sport activities for people who are now less active due to the pandemic.

We can fund a wide range of costs including instructors, premises, equipment, marketing and promotion.

Every organisation receiving an award will need to use the Find Your Active branding, collect simple information about the participants using the participant data form and complete an end of project partner survey on our online Impact Tool. We welcome at any time inspirational stories about people who are benefitting from the fund.

All funded activities will need to be completed by March 31st 2022.

Complete the short and simple online application. We welcome a short video to support your application but this is not essential.  We don’t require any supporting documents to be submitted with your application, but we will require proof of a safeguarding policy if you are successful with your application and work with children, young people, or vulnerable adults.

Please relate your application to the fund priorities and let us know how many less active people you plan to engage and who they are. Tell us how much money you need and what it will be spent on. If you have any questions before you apply, please contact the relevant Active Essex Relationship Manager for your area.

Delivery partners must comply to our funding standards. To ensure we are working with safe, inclusive and reputable organisations and activities, Active Essex requires funding recipients to adhere to our Standard Operating Conditions outlined in this short video: https://www.activeessex.org/delivering-sport/clubs-coaches/funding-awards-standard-operating-conditions/

If your application is successful you will be required to sign a grant agreement including a condition that you agree to comply with these standards.

After you’ve applied:

We will acknowledge receipt of your application, and let you have a decision as soon as possible. Usually this will take up to two weeks. If we need some more information we will contact you.

If you are successful, you’ll receive a simple award agreement clarifying the purpose of the award, the amount, and the conditions of the award. Once the agreement has been signed, you will receive your award within 14 – 28 days.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What do you mean by people who are physically deconditioned? Anyone who is less physically active because of the pandemic. In particular, anyone doing less than 150 minutes exercise per week.

Can I apply as an individual or a friendship group? We can only give grants to constituted organisations with a bank account. However, we can fund individuals who want to be a Find Your Active Ambassador. There is a separate application process to apply for Ambassador funding.

Can I delay my application to the autumn or winter? The reason for this fund is to help organisations who are willing and able to act urgently to engage people who are physically deconditioned because of the pandemic. We expect most of the grants to be issued in July and August so organisations are able to act quickly. All grants must be spent within six months of receipt, or by March 31st 2022 at the latest.
