Women and girls taking part in a fitness session at a Women Like Us Festival

Women and girls in Thurrock are being invited to attend the first ever ‘Women Like Us’ festival being held on Saturday 22nd June between 10am and 1pm at the Civic Hall, Impulse Leisure, Grays.

From Clubbercise, Pilates and racket sports, to cricket, health walks and Fight Klub, there are taster sessions for all across a wide variety of activities whether you are looking for low, moderate or high intensity exercise. The aim is to encourage girls and women to either try something new, or take their first steps to becoming more active in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

The festival in Thurrock is one of a series taking place around the county inspired by the national ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and is organised by Active Essex, Active Thurrock and Impulse Leisure.

They will showcase some of the fantastic activities and sports available in the local community, such as strollercise, a fun fitness dance programme to 50s music, Nordic Walking and Clubbercise, an easy-to-follow dance workout with rave glow sticks & disco lights.

There are now well over 250 ‘This Girl Can Essex’ ambassadors across the county who inspire women in their local community to get active, meet new people and have fun. The ambassador programme is run by Active Essex, a County Partnership, with the aim to change one million lives by getting Essex active.

Juliette Raison, Active Essex Relationship Manager for South-West Essex and thematic lead for Driving Participation, said: “It is great that Thurrock will be hosting an event.  We know that for many women, getting more active and trying something new can sometimes be hard and daunting, so we are excited to encourage women to join us in a friendly and supportive environment.”

“The festival also happens to fall within June when the county is joining in the 3030 Essex challenge to get people to do 30 minutes of activity for the 30 days of June. So the 22nd is a great opportunity to get your active 30 done and dusted for the day!”

Participants in the string of festivals across the Essex say that the events bring the community together and inspire females of all ages and ability to take part in physical activity and sport.

Participants are encouraged to partake in as many taster activities sessions as they like.  Sessions will be on first come first serve basis, so locals are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
