Families in Essex  are encouraged to get active this half term, as the Active Essex Foundation prepares to launch its 30:30 Essex challenge, encouraging residents to take part in 30 minutes of physical activity for 30 days in the month of June.

Regular daily exercise is proven to lead to great personal benefits for families, such as increased energy & stamina, positive mental wellbeing and not to forget, great fun!

To prepare  residents for the upcoming challenge, the Active Essex Foundation has suggested five activities for families to get active this half-term:

Southend:

  • Take part in a museum treasure trail – Visit all four of Southend’s museums by 2nd June to win a special prize
  • Take a walk on the wild side – Explore the ancient woodland at Belfairs Woodland Centre – some of the trees are over 1000 years old!
  • Walk a mile out to sea – Stroll along Southend Pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world, for spectacular views of the Estuary
  • Join up to a local Parkrun – parkruns are a great starting point for anybody looking to get more active! The Southend Parkrun takes place at Gunners Park and more information can be found here – https://www.parkrun.org.uk/southend/
  • Start your 30:30 Essex warm up at home! – from den-building in the garden to yoga in your living room – there are plenty of activities you can take part in at home!

Colchester

  • Take a brisk walk around castle park and Colchester’s historic streets! – full of history and spectacular sights, this activity is free to all!
  • Visit Leisure world for Half-term activities – activities include table-tennis, swimming and more!
  • Take the family for a day out at Highwoods Country park – great for dog walks and who doesn’t love a family picnic?
  • Join up to a local Parkrun, – with 2k distances for junior members and 5k for adults, Parkruns are a great starting point for anybody looking to get more active! Park runs take place at Castle Park and Highwoods Country park.

Start your 30:30 Essex warm up at home! – from den-building in the garden to yoga in your living room – there are plenty of activities you can take part in at home!

Tendring

  • Visit the Naze – Take time out to enjoy the unique coastal landscape on offer, spot the rare migrating birds and visit the iconic Naze Visitor Centre
  • Swim in the great outdoors – Take a swim in the vintage Brightlingsea Outdoor Lido, opening for the season on 25th May
  • Forest School Drop Off Day – Visit Fingringhoe Wick Visitor Centre on the 29th May for a day of fun on the reserve, including minibeast hunting, den building and much more.
  • Join up to a local Parkrun – parkruns are a great starting point for anybody looking to get more active! The Harwich parkrun takes place at Cliff Park and more information can be found here – https://www.parkrun.org.uk/harwich/
  • Start your 30:30 Essex warm up at home! – from den-building in the garden to yoga in your living room – there are plenty of activities you can take part in at home!

Basildon

  • Basildon Sporting Village – Facilities include a climbing wall, an Olympic-size swimming pool and an enormous eight-court sports hall!
  • Spend a day at Old MacDonald’s Farm and Fun Park – Activities on offer include regular magic shows, animal petting sessions and an array of fun rollercoaster rides
  • Take a brisk stroll around Wat Tyler Country Park – There’s plenty of fun to be had for all, including a WWII trail for history buffs and a sculpture trail for art lovers!
  • Join up to a local Parkrun – parkruns are a great starting point for anybody looking to get more active! The Basildon parkrun takes place at Northlands Park and more information can be found here – https://www.parkrun.org.uk/basildon/
  • Start your 30:30 Essex warm up at home! – from den-building in the garden to yoga in your living room – there are plenty of activities you can take part in at home!

Chelmsford

  • Explore Hylands Estate – Take a stroll around the gardens or play in the castle themed adventure park – there’s no shortage of activities available at the Grade II listed estate!
  • Get Set Grow – Kids can Learn all about fruit and vegetables by following the immersive garden trail at Garden Hyde Hall this half-term
  • Chelmsford Treasure Trail – Discover Chelmsford’s historic waterways with a self-guided treasure trail – trail winners even get entered into a cash prize draw!
  • Join up to a local Parkrun – parkruns are a great starting point for anybody looking to get more active! The Chelmsford parkrun takes place at Central Park and more information can be found here – https://www.parkrun.org.uk/chelmsfordcentral/
  • Start your 30:30 Essex warm up at home! – from den-building in the garden to yoga in your living room – there are plenty of activities you can take part in at home!
