My name is Serena; I am a married 42 year old mum of 1 from Purfleet. I haven’t always been particularly sporty or motivated, in the past I’ve tried 5K runs, Yoga, Aerobics, Pilates and Body Pump to name a few, but I’d get bored and fall out of the routine.
About 4 years ago I started going to the gym again (this time lifting weights) and had gotten quite strong, but it was starting to lose its appeal so in typical ‘Serena’ fashion, I started going less and less. Then I discovered a Pole Fitness course in Essex. I went along to my first Pole class and I found that I could hold some poses, the other ladies in class were all so friendly and encouraging; I was hooked immediately. I went every week and the progress I made motivated me to keep going. After 3 ½ years of Pole Fitness I’m still surprised and encouraged by the progress I make every lesson. It took me 2 years, but I can now do the splits and hold a handstand for 10 seconds, I couldn’t do either as a child! I’m doing things now that I didn’t think I would ever do and it feels so good. I haven’t been this happy or confident in years; attending workshops with people I don’t know, and trying new activities is totally out of my comfort zone, but being more active has made me a more confident woman which has also helped me in my personal life and career. As well as these personal achievements, I have met so many lovely ladies, via Facebook and Instagram groups and at various workshops in the UK and abroad. As a result of being stronger and healthier I can set an example to my 12 year old son, he is probably my biggest motivation; the other day he called me Wonderwoman!!!
As a ‘This Girl Can’ ambassador, I want to show as many women as possible that sport is for them. There are so many different sports, low impact, high impact, for all abilities, get out there and try something new; it’s such an empowering feeling!!! My Mantra is ‘She believed she could, so she did’. By getting more active and believing in myself, I’ve realised that I am capable of so much more than I thought.
