Meg

I became a This Girl Can ambassador to support more women and girls into getting involved in sport and exercise for their physical and mental health. Now more than ever people are stuck at home struggling and sport can have massive benefits on elevating stress on the mind while also contributing to physical benefits. I joined because I was faced with many problems as a girl getting into football, with so many female teams not reaching enough players to have a full squad. I’ve played for boys teams in the past due to not having the same opportunities available to me as a girl, and I want that to change.

I’ve been playing various sports from all boys cricket teams to volleyball and more but the sport I love and the one that has always been there for me is football.

I first started playing in school where I noticed I was actually not half-bad! So then I decided to join my local girls team and I was made captain. I’ve since moved to several teams and even now in my Suffolk Premier League women’s team, we’re seriously struggling for players at such a high level.

Secondary school was really the place for me that opened up my love for so many different sports, and provided me with opportunities to progress and play regularly.

Women and girls shouldn’t have to feel as though they can’t play the sports they love or do the activities they enjoy, just because of the judgements or lack of opportunities they may face. I want the mentality that women are fierce and capable, and the reality that we are just as deserving of respect and opportunity as men and boys, to grow. Women should feel safe doing what they love and being unapologetically themselves.
