Earth Day invites us to reflect on the choices we make every day such as the small habits that shape our wellbeing, our communities, and the world we’re leaving for future generations. At Active Essex, we believe one of the most powerful choices we can make is simple: choosing movement over miles.
Active travel isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s about feeling better in ourselves, connecting with our neighbourhoods, and reducing our impact on the planet. Across Essex, more people are discovering how walking, wheeling, and cycling can transform everyday journeys into something meaningful.
Why Active Travel matters for our planet, and our wellbeing
Most of the journeys we take in Essex are short ones – the school run, a quick trip to the shops, visiting a friend nearby. These everyday moments are powerful opportunities to leave the car at home and choose movement instead. When we walk, wheel, or cycle, we’re not just getting from place to place; we’re giving ourselves time to breathe, notice our surroundings, and reconnect with the communities we live in.
Active travel also plays a huge role in shaping a healthier, greener Essex. Short car journeys are a major contributor to local congestion and air pollution, especially around schools and busy town centres. Research shows that switching just one trip per day from car to bike or foot can reduce an individual’s carbon footprint by around 0.5 tonnes a year – a substantial share of average per‑person CO₂ emissions.
By swapping even one or two of these trips each week, we can make a meaningful difference by easing traffic, improving air quality, and creating safer, more welcoming streets for everyone.
Choosing to walk or cycle even once or twice a week can:
- Boost physical and mental wellbeing, helping reduce stress and lift mood
- Reduce congestion and improve air quality in our neighbourhoods
- Create safer, calmer streets where children and families feel confident moving around
- Strengthen our connection to local green spaces and the natural environment
When more of us choose movement over miles, those small individual choices add up to a big collective impact, and across Essex, a growing range of community initiatives are helping people choose active travel in ways that feel enjoyable, accessible, and sustainable.
Essex Pedal Power: Transforming everyday journeys through community cycling
One of the most inspiring examples of active travel in action is community cycling initiative Essex Pedal Power. By providing free bikes, training, and ongoing support to residents in disadvantaged areas such as Clacton & Jaywick, Harwich, Colchester, Basildon, Harlow and Canvey Island, the programme is removing barriers and giving people the confidence to travel actively.
The impact is clear: 32% of Essex Pedal Power recipients have shifted from using their car to travelling by bike, reducing emissions and easing congestion in their communities. Independent analysis also shows that free bike schemes like Essex Pedal Power deliver a 12‑times return on investment, and a recent health impact assessment estimates they could prevent 58 new cases of disease every year, saving the NHS around £1 million annually. Participants tell us they feel more independent, more connected, and more energised, with many now using their bikes for work, school, errands, and leisure. It’s a powerful reminders that when communities are supported, active travel becomes a natural part of daily life.
Walking to school: Small steps, big impact
Our Walk to School initiatives are helping families build healthy habits from an early age. By encouraging children to walk, wheel, or scoot to school, we’re reducing traffic around school gates, improving air quality, and giving young people a positive, active start to their day.
Schools across Essex are embracing the movement, and the ripple effects are clear: calmer mornings, more confident children, and stronger community spirit.
Beat the Street: Turning Essex into a giant game board
This year, thousands of residents have taken part in Beat the Street, transforming their towns into interactive walking and cycling games. By tapping Beat Boxes, earning points, and exploring new routes, families, schools, and workplaces have rediscovered the joy of moving more.
Beat the Street encourages people to leave the car at home, explore their local area, and build active habits, all while having fun together.
A greener, more Active Essex starts with us
This Earth Day, we’re celebrating the people and programmes that are already making Essex a more active, sustainable place to live. But we’re also looking ahead, because the journey doesn’t end here.
Whether you’re taking your first walk to school, picking up a new Essex Pedal Power bike, or simply choosing to move a little more each day, you’re part of something bigger. Together, we can build a greener Essex, one journey at a time.
