Aveley FC Girls club

The Future of Aveley FC Women & Girls

WGLU

Aveley Football Club has been part of the Essex football landscape since 1927, built on a strong connection to its community. Today, the women’s and girls’ section represents a bold and exciting step forward, one shaped by the growth of the women’s game and Aveley FC’s belief that football should be open to everyone.

Driven by families, players, and volunteers rather than elite structures, the programme has grown from grassroots demand. FA Wildcats sessions form the foundation, introducing girls to football in a fun, supportive setting, while the club continues to develop inclusive pathways that give girls the chance to progress and succeed.

Team Manager Shane explains the long‑term vision:

“We wish to expand our roster of teams throughout the club at all age groups. We wish to collaborate male-dominated football structures toward inclusive participation and youth development pathways for girls. Our Wildcats, which play on a Saturday, is the foundation stage for clubs building formal girls’ teams.”

While Aveley FC does not yet have a long‑documented senior women’s first‑team history, what the club does have is momentum and ambition. Recent youth success includes:

  • U16 Treble Winners (2023/24)
  • The same group completing a league and cup double as U18s in 2024/25, playing up a year under Carl and Callum

These achievements highlight the standard of coaching, player development, and commitment within the club.

Parkside Stadium has also become part of the wider women’s football landscape. Since 2023, teams such as Hashtag United Women have ground‑shared there, placing Aveley FC within the infrastructure of the women’s game and giving local girls the chance to experience higher‑level football right on their doorstep.

“The club is part of a growing movement and focused on expanding opportunities for girls in football across the borough and in Essex more broadly.”

What Makes Aveley FC Women Different?

At its core, Aveley FC Women & Girls is built on community and belonging. Shane, the team manager explains:

“What sets us apart is our strong sense of community and inclusivity. We genuinely want prioritise creating a welcoming environment where players feel valued. We want players to know they’re supported, encouraged, and given opportunities to develop. We want  a real “team-first” culture that will hopefully make people want to stay and grow with the club.”

That culture is reflected on and off the pitch. Training sessions are structured, engaging, and purposeful, with clear objectives and a positive, supportive atmosphere. On matchdays, the focus is on preparation and communication, with players encouraged to take responsibility and support one another, recognising that growth often comes through shared experiences.

But the club is about more than football. Shane adds:

“Being part of the club provides a real sense of belonging and routine. It’s a space to switch off from daily stress, stay active, and connect with others. The social side is just as important as the football—having teammates who support you on and off the pitch can make a huge difference to confidence, mood, and overall wellbeing.”

Challenges Along the Way

Like many grassroots women’s teams, Aveley FC has faced challenges around funding, and perception.

“We have a great facilities base with our stadium and new tier 6 standard 3g pitch. There can also be barriers in attracting new players due to the lack of teams or pathway throughout the system currently. Overcoming outdated perceptions about women’s football has been another hurdle, but progress is being made as more people recognise the value and quality of the women’s game.”

Progress is being made as awareness grows, and more people recognise the quality and value of women’s football.

A Message to Women and Girls Thinking About Getting Involved

For any woman or girl who wants to get active but feels nervous or unsure. Shane offers reassurance:

“Just go for it—you’re not alone in feeling that way. Everyone starts somewhere, and most people walking into a new session feel nervous at first. Clubs like ours are there to support you, not judge you. Once you take that first step, you’ll likely realise how welcoming and rewarding it can be. I hope that people know that we at Aveley are determined and passionate to extend our  family to the female section as it should be.”

Sometimes, one small step is all it takes to open the door to opportunities you never expected.

Looking Ahead

Shane explains that the aim is to grow on and off the pitch, expand squads, develop younger players, and compete at higher levels, while remaining rooted in the community.

“becoming a go-to club for women and girls locally who want to get involved in football in a supportive environment.”

By building teams at every age group, developing an elite girls’ section, and creating a sustainable women’s pathway from youth to open age, Aveley FC is focused on long‑term opportunity, not short‑term gain. And this is only the beginning for Aveley FC Women & Girls.
