Involved in teaching PE (most sports at coach level)
Hi my name is Kierran, I am involved with teaching PE in my current role and through my work with the Multi-Schools Council I have helped develop sport provision for children with SEN.
At school I was always a keen sportsman, playing for the school football, basketball and rugby teams. During the summer I was also part of the athletics team and enjoyed events such as cross country.
On leaving school I carried on playing football and was interested to take on a job that had a PE element to it. In 2008 I started my role as sports co-ordinator at Market Field School (a special school in Colchester) and helped to develop the sporting provision both internally and externally. With the support of the children at the school, I then took on the Mutli-Schools Council (linked to the 2012 GetSet project) which aims to help break down perceptions about children with disabilities, especially with sport.
Since then I have worked with Active Essex to develop events such as the Special School Games which gives sporting opportunities for children in SEN education.
Sport is important to me because some of my best memories have come from sport. I have developed a passion to ensure others can create memories through sport and was particularly inspired watching the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
I wanted the same level of acceptance in sport to be generated through school sport and I have seen how sport can make a real difference in SEN education. It was clear when I joined Market Field School that sport was fundamental to the school’s values. Sport is essential for schools as it gives children hope, opportunity and confidence.
I want to keep supporting the opportunities that are out there for children to get involved in sport. I dream of a world in 10 years’ time that children with special educational needs and disabilities can be fully accepted on the playing field and throughout education – sport can be the tool for achievement!
