The Active Essex Safeguarding Team supports a strong safeguarding culture across the organisation. The team is made up of staff from different areas of Active Essex, with safeguarding responsibilities carried out alongside their main roles.
The team includes Cheryl Lomas, Designated Safeguarding Lead and two Deputy Safeguarding Leads, Wayne Hickey and Marianne Appleton who provide leadership, support and oversight.
The Safeguarding Team offers advice, guidance and support to the wider Active Essex team and meets regularly to ensure safeguarding standards are met in line with NSPCC Sport and Ann Craft Trust. Meetings take place more frequently during school holidays to monitor any safeguarding or welfare concerns linked to Active Essex‑funded Holiday Clubs.
While the team does not case manage safeguarding concerns, they will support and signpost organisations to appropriate guidance and advice. For bespoke safeguarding support, clubs and organisations should contact the Sport Welfare Leads, Wayne and Marianne
