Active Essex Team Reflections: The growth of our interns, Jess and Shaniya

Active Essex Team's Reflections

As we mark National Apprenticeship Week, it feels like the perfect moment to reflect on the journeys of our brilliant interns, Jess and Shaniya, and the skills, confidence, and experience they’ve gained in their first six months with Active Essex.

This year’s theme, Skills for Life, couldn’t be more fitting. Both interns have embraced every opportunity, developing practical abilities, discovering new strengths, and contributing meaningfully to our work supporting people across Greater Essex to lead active, healthy lives.

Over the last six months, Active Essex has watched them grow into valued members of the organisation. Here’s their reflection on how their internship experience has shaped them, and us.

Jess’ Journey

I’ve really strengthened my professional skills over the last six months, from organising events and managing timelines to supporting a variety of projects across the team. Being involved in so many different areas has given me a much clearer understanding of how Active Essex works and the impact we make. This experience has helped me grow in confidence and given me key skills I know I’ll take forward.

This internship has also pushed me out of my comfort zone in all the right ways. I’ve learnt to adapt quickly, take initiative, and step into new situations with confidence. Presenting, working with partners, and supporting events has helped me understand my role within the organisation and how I contribute to our wider goals.

What I’ve loved most is the people and the variety – no two weeks have been the same! The team made me feel welcome from day one, and there’s always someone happy to help or share advice. Getting involved in so many projects has helped me understand the real impact our work has on communities, which has been a real highlight.

I’ll carry forward the confidence, communication skills, and resilience I’ve developed here. Managing different responsibilities, problemsolving when things change, and learning from those around me have all prepared me really well for whatever comes next.

My advice for new interns? Say yes to opportunities, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Stay open, stay curious, and embrace each day as a chance to learn, you’ll discover strengths you didn’t know you had.

Shaniya’s Thoughts

I have really developed my skills in CRM systems, automations, and Excel since being at Active Essex. I’ve also gained a much better understanding of how the dynamic works and how the teams come together to promote positive wellbeing across local communities.

Working with automations has helped me streamline tasks and work more efficiently. I’ve enjoyed experimenting with different ways of sorting and analysing survey data, it’s pushed me to think differently and be more innovative.

I’ve loved getting involved in community and sports events. Active Essex works with such a wide mix of people, and it’s been great speaking to them, everyone’s always friendly, open, and happy to chat.

Technology is such a big part of most workplaces now, so the digital skills I’ve gained will definitely help me moving forward. More than anything, I’ll take my curiosity and love of innovation into whatever I do next!

Some advice I would give to anyone starting an internship would be to just be a sponge and soak up as much as you can. Stay inquisitive, ask questions, and explore new ways of doing things. You never know what you might discover!

Looking to the future

As we reflect on this national week, we’re reminded of the power and purpose behind opportunities like these. Jess and Shaniya’s journeys show just how transformational an internship can be, not only for young people gaining vital experience, but for teams like ours, who benefit from their fresh perspectives, curiosity, and enthusiasm.

Their development also reflects our ongoing commitment to upskilling future professionals and strengthening the sport and physical activity workforce, ensuring the next generation is equipped with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive in this industry.

Their first six months have been filled with learning, growth, and meaningful impact, and we’re excited to see how they continue to flourish in the months ahead.
