Active Essex Team Reflects: Connecting Communities Through Essex Activate

Active Essex Team's Reflections

The Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) programme, known as Essex Activate across Essex and Thurrock, provides eligible children and young people with free access to activities, nutritious food, and positive experiences throughout the school holidays.

While the programme offers opportunities to stay active and have fun, its impact runs much deeper. It helps young people build confidence, form friendships, discover new interests, and support their overall wellbeing.

The benefits of ActivAte extend beyond the children taking part. The programme also offers parents, carers and grandparents valuable respite during the six-week summer break, helping to ease childcare pressures, provide peace of mind, and connect families with additional support in their local communities.

Why Awareness Matters

For many families across the county, the school holidays can be a challenging time. While summer should be filled with fun and memorable experiences, some children face barriers to accessing activities, social opportunities, and healthy meals. That is where Essex Activate plays a crucial role.

Working in marketing and communications, I often reflect on the importance of ensuring these opportunities do not just exist, but that families know about them.

Even the most impactful programme can only make a difference if it reaches the people who need it most.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping to bridge that gap. In the lead-up to the summer holidays, we work closely with colleagues, local authorities, delivery partners, schools, and community organisations to help ensure Essex Activate reaches as many eligible families as possible.

Reaching the Right Audiences

This work involves far more than posting information online. It is about understanding our audiences and how they access information.

Some families engage through social media, while others hear about the programme through schools, community networks, newsletters, local partners, or trusted organisations embedded within their communities.

Whether creating social media campaigns, developing promotional materials, writing website content, producing emails, or supporting media activity, every piece of communication has the same purpose: helping families understand what is available and feel confident accessing it.

Marketing is often measured by visibility and reach, but programmes like Essex Activate show how communication can also be a tool for inclusion. By targeting messages effectively and working with partners who understand their communities, we can help remove barriers and ensure opportunities reach those who need them most.

Looking Beyond the Numbers

What makes this work particularly meaningful is knowing the people behind the statistics.

While registrations, website visits, and engagement figures help us measure success, the real impact is seen in the child trying a new sport for the first time, the young person discovering a passion, or the family who feels supported during the holidays.

Each summer presents opportunities to learn and improve. By reviewing data, audience insights, and partner feedback, we can continue refining our approach and maximise the programme’s reach and impact.

Making a Difference Through Communication

As I reflect on this year’s summer delivery, I am reminded that effective communication is not simply about sharing information. It is about connecting people with opportunities that can genuinely improve their lives.

Essex Activate demonstrates the power of partnership, community, and targeted support. As a Marketing and Communications Officer, I am proud to play a role in ensuring these opportunities reach the families who need them most.

Because sometimes the most important thing communication can do is help the right message reach the right person at the right time. When that happens, the impact extends far beyond the screen, into communities, families, and the lives of young people across Greater Essex.
