At Active Essex, we believe the future of the sport and physical activity sector lies in the hands of our young people—and we’re passionate about making sure they’re supported, inspired, and empowered every step of the way.
We know that for our sector to thrive—not just survive—we need to create clear, inclusive pathways that allow young people to get involved early, test and develop their skills, and most importantly, have a voice in shaping the future of sport and physical activity. Whether it’s through volunteering, community sport, education, or early career opportunities, we’re committed to ensuring every young person has the chance to grow, lead, and feel valued.
Why Now?
The need has never been greater. With the NHS under pressure and the nation’s health and wellbeing at a critical point, sport and physical activity are more than just games—they’re a vital part of prevention, connection, and community. We need a workforce that’s not only skilled and passionate but also reflective of the communities it serves.
That’s why we’re investing in both the next generation of leaders and the current employers and deployers who shape their experience. Because a thriving workforce starts with a thriving workplace—one that’s safe, inclusive, and rewarding.
Our Commitment in Action
This year, Essex is celebrating the Year of Opportunity, and we’re proud to be leading the way. But for us, this isn’t just a one-year initiative—it’s a long-term commitment.
Through our People, Culture and Skills Framework, we’ve set out a bold vision for how we support workforce development across the county. This includes:
- Training and Development: From safeguarding and mental health first aid to leadership and peer-mentoring, we’re making sure young people and professionals alike have access to high-quality learning opportunities.
- Rewarding Volunteering: We’re creating meaningful pathways for young people to volunteer, gain experience, and be recognised for their contributions.
- Apprenticeship: We’re proud to support the Essex Coach Core programme, which provides young people with the opportunity to earn while they learn, gaining hands-on experience in coaching and community sport. It’s a powerful way to build confidence, skills, and a career in the sector.
- Investing in Organisational Culture: We’re supporting organisations to build inclusive, supportive environments where staff and volunteers feel safe, valued, and inspired to grow.
- Creating Learning Spaces: Whether in clubs, community hubs, sector leaders or decision makers we’re helping to build spaces where young people can learn, lead, and thrive.
