Brandon Groves Football Club Helped Shape a Future Lioness

WGLU

What once started as a small football club in South Ockendon Village, nearly three decades ago has now become a proud starting point of a Lioness representing England on the European stage. Michelle Agyemang, who started playing football as a child for Brandon Groves Football Club, is now wearing the England shirt at the Women’s Euros. An inspiration for all young girls across Essex.

What Makes Michelle’s Journey So Inspiring?

Michelle started her journey with Brandon Groves Football Club back in 2011. At the young age of 5 and the only girl there at the time. Michelle stood out from the very beginning, not just for her talent but her determination. It was a moment to remember, not only for Michelle but for the club as well.

Whilst playing centre back for the club, Michelle also spent her time training with Arsenal Academy. Her presence has and will continue to pave the way for more girls to get involved with football and physical activity.

The Women’s Euro’s is one of the biggest stages in international football, watched by millions across Europe. For Michelle to now be a part of the Lionesses, it is a credit to her and her hard work. It has been such an incredible achievement that has sent such excitement through the entire Brandon Groves Football Club community. As one club representative shared:

“It’s an amazing feeling knowing we have a Lioness playing in the Euros and quite proud to say Michelle started at our club. We have recently shared the news with the rest of the club, so the excitement level has gone up even more now.”

For someone that started their journey in a local football club to now being involved in an international stage, its inspiring for so many young girls to see and witness. It’s a great example of what can be achieved in the right environment.

A Club Built on Community

Brandon Groves Football Club has been running for 29 years at their home ground in South Ockendon Recreation ground. They currently coach around 150+ players ranging from the ages of 4 to 16. They have grown bigger and bigger over the last few years. The club has been a welcoming space for young players of all abilities to grow and learn. Michelle is a perfect example of what a great environment can do.

The club currently have 13 teams registered to Brentwood youth league, including a dedicated girl’s only team. Not only that but they have recently organised a wildcat’s girls only training team. This is to encourage girls between the ages of 5 to 11 to get involved in a fun and pressure free environment. It’s part of the club’s wider movement to making football more accessible and inclusive, by helping young girls build confidence and stay active in a supportive community.

Without the help of the clubs 20 dedicated volunteers, some of whom have been involved for a long time, none of this would have been possible. Their continued support and commitment make a real difference. By building a strong sense of community that helps these young girls feel part of something great and where young future athletes like Michelle Agyemang can start their journey.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Michelle’s success is already having a ripple effect. The club shared that they have been working on a project with England FA to give insight into Michelle’s story. As a result, their Emeralds girls’ team were able to go ahead and meet Michelle and the rest of the Lionesses in person. This is so important and a moment that they won’t forget as it gives them a real glimpse into what’s possible.

How Does This Connect to the Women and Girls Like Us Campaign?

Michelle’s story ties in perfectly with the Women and Girls Like Us campaign by Active Essex. This campaign celebrates the real, relatable stories of women and girls. By getting active in ways that is best for them and their lifestyle. Whether that be through football, dance or by simply walking and moving around a bit more. The campaign aims to help women and girls feel more confident and included within the community. In addition, to show that there are many ways to be active and it’s about breaking down the barriers and finding the best approach for you.

Michelle’s journey is a great example of the importance of this campaign. Especially at starting her journey at such a young age at her local club. Through continued support and opportunities, she is now moving on to fantastic things. For example, representing her country on one of the biggest stages of her chosen sport. Her story proves that when girls are given the space, encouragement and assistance, amazing things can happen.

A Future Lioness, Born in Essex

Every big dream starts somewhere, and Michelle’s story is a great representation of that. It’s a great success and a proud moment not only for Michelle but for Brandon Groves Football Club as well.  Her journey is a reminder to every young girl that they should follow their dreams as their journey could be next. It also poses an important reflective moment on the importance of nurturing young girls, supporting their determination because for this small club they have helped spark a future Lioness.
