For many families of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), finding holiday provision that meets their child’s individual needs can be difficult. At Lighthouse SEND Holiday Club, children are given opportunities to try new experiences, develop confidence and build meaningful relationships in a supportive environment.
The club deliverer said:
“This year’s SEND Holiday Club has been one of the most positive summer programmes to date, with children accessing new experiences in an environment where they feel safe, understood and able to participate at their own pace.”
The club’s child-centred approach has enabled young people to explore new activities, build confidence and enjoy meaningful experiences throughout the summer holidays.
One of the standout moments of the summer was a visit to Wrabness Woods, where children spent time outdoors exploring nature, building dens and learning through the natural environment. Staff saw high levels of engagement throughout the day, demonstrating the benefits that outdoor experiences can have for children when activities are tailored to their needs.
One child attending the club experienced mobility difficulties and had never been able to ride a bike. During an inclusive Wheels for All cycling session, they were given the opportunity to take part using equipment suited to their needs.
As staff supported them throughout the activity, they reported that:
“the child became increasingly confident during the activity and was able to achieve much more than expected.”
Their parent was surprised and pleased by what their child had been able to accomplish, highlighting the positive impact that accessible activities can have on confidence and physical development.
Another child initially found outdoor activities challenging and did not enjoy spending time outside the home. Through personalised support and a gradual introduction to new experiences, they began to grow in confidence.
“The child became much more comfortable being outdoors and began enjoying trips to places such as the park and beach.”
This demonstrates how adapting activities around individual needs can help young people engage with the world around them.
Alongside Wheels for All, children also enjoyed a range of activities including beach and park visits, skating, scootering and a reptile experience. These opportunities allowed children to try new things, develop new skills and build confidence in a supportive setting.
The impact was felt by families too. Several new families joined the club after struggling to find suitable holiday provision. As children settled into sessions, built friendships and formed trusted relationships with staff, parents could see the difference.
“Children reached the point where they didn’t want to leave at the end of the session.”
“Parents told us how thankful they were to have found a club they trusted and where they knew their child was happy.”
Staff also reflected on the success of the club structure this year. Calmer, child-led mornings and free-play opportunities helped children settle into sessions and allowed staff to better understand each child’s individual needs before introducing more structured activities later in the day. This flexible approach supported positive engagement and helped children feel comfortable and confident throughout their time at the club.
The benefits have continued beyond the holiday period.
“Families have since asked whether the SEND club could operate for longer days and during every school holiday.”
This shows the value that accessible SEND provision brings to local children, young people and their families.
Lighthouse SEND Holiday Club continues to demonstrate the difference that inclusive, tailored holiday provision can make for children and families. By creating opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy positive experiences in a supportive environment, the club is helping to ensure every child can thrive during the school holidays.
