Plume School’s Fitness Project: Empowering Students Through Movement and Opportunity

Active Essex

At the heart of Maldon, Plume School has transformed its physical activity offer into a hub of opportunity, inclusion, and wellbeing for students and staff alike. Thanks to the support of Active Essex and the Opening School Facilities funding provided by Department for Education, the school has been able to invest in brand new gym equipment, unlocking a world of movement for those who previously had limited access.

The project has been designed to reach girls and disadvantaged or disaffected students, offering them a safe, welcoming environment to start their journey into physical activity, without the barrier of costly gym memberships. From pre-school sessions to lunchtime and after-school clubs, the gym is now a hive of activity. A particular highlight has been the Girls Engagement Group, which has seen a surge in participation, especially among Years 7 to 11 age groups.

But it’s not only students who are benefitting. Since January 2025, staff members have also been introduced, with 15–25 regularly using the gym each week, a testament to the school’s commitment to staff wellbeing as well as student health.

The impact of the project has been profound, with over 750–800 users inducted in the new gym since the project began, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students who once felt excluded from these types of spaces now feel empowered, confident, and proud of their progress.

“We can use this now where we couldn’t before. Having more equipment made me want to come more. There is nothing like this within walking distance of my home. It’s perfect that I can come after school and not worry about transport. If I’m having a bad week, it helps my mental health.”

From the very beginning, Active Essex has been involved in the project’s success. Our team provided guidance throughout the application process as well as encouragement and support during its journey.

“In teaching, we are in the business of making a difference to students’ lives. This funding and project, which would not have been possible without the support of Active Essex, has made and will continue to make a significantly positive impact on the lives of our students and the mental and physical well-being of our young people.”

Jimmy Ainscough, Project Lead

“We’ve seen far more engagement in physical activity and weightlifting with the girls. They can see a difference in their bodies, confidence, and socially. Without this funding, this may not have happened.”

Laura White, Staff Member

The journey hasn’t been without its lessons. The team underestimated just how many students would want to get involved, and how quickly! But what they’ve learned is clear.  When you provide high quality facilities, young people rise to the occasion, they respect the space given to them, commit to their goals, and build habits that will last a lifetime.

“We’re incredibly proud to have supported Plume School in building a space that fosters opportunity, wellbeing, and inclusivity. The transformation we’ve seen particularly among girls and disadvantaged students highlights the power of removing barriers and providing safe, welcoming environments to be active. This project isn’t just about new equipment, it’s about empowering young people to take ownership of their health, boost their confidence, and create habits that will last a lifetime.”
