A brand-new roller hockey club is bringing excitement, confidence and connection to local young people in Essex and they’re already making a big impact in only its first few months of launching.
Officially introduced on 7th February 2026, in Hockley, Essex. The club has been created to give more children the chance to try a fast, fun and inclusive sport locally, they have quickly become a buzzing hub of activity, energy and excitement.
From day one, the club’s goal has been simple:
“Our vision has always been to create a safe, supportive and welcoming environment where young people can try the sport without pressure. We’re passionate about making roller hockey accessible to families who may not have previously considered it, whether that’s due to cost, limited local provision, or simply not knowing the sport was available to them.”
The response has been overwhelming. With around 20 young people aged 5–16 attending weekly, sessions are now filled with both complete beginners and those returning with skating or hockey experience.
The club was founded and is now run by three passionate coaches, Dan, Rob and Danielle, all of whom are both players and parents themselves. They explain that they saw the lack of local opportunities, and the challenge families face:
“We’re all passionate about growing grassroots roller hockey in the area. We recognise that travelling to local ice rinks such as Chelmsford or Romford isn’t always feasible for families, and with limited roller hockey provision locally, we wanted to create something inclusive and community-driven. Our goal is to provide a space where children can get active, build friendships and develop new skills close to home.”
Sessions are split into two groups, beginners and more experienced players, each including warm‑ups, skating fundamentals, stick handling, passing drills and small‑sided games. The focus isn’t just on building skills, but on teamwork, communication and leaving the session with a big smile.
“We place a strong emphasis on individual development while encouraging teamwork, communication and sportsmanship. Above all, we want every player to leave smiling, feeling more confident, and excited to return the following week.”
A major step forward for the club has been its new partnership with The Locker Room Project an organisation that collects unwanted hockey equipment and redistributes it to families for free. This allows the club to loan kits to children who may otherwise miss out due to costs. They explain:
“The Locker Room Project is a fantastic group that collects unwanted hockey kit and redistributes it to players free of charge. Through this partnership, we will be able to start to help remove one of the biggest barriers to entry, the cost of equipment, by loaning kit to families who need it. This plays a huge part in our mission to make roller hockey accessible to as many young people as possible and to ensure no child misses out due to financial circumstances.”
Although the club is still fresh, the positive impact on the children has been remarkable. Technical skills are improving quickly, but even more special is the change in confidence, friendships and overall wellbeing.
The club offers a safe, supportive space where young people can:
- build resilience
- boost their mood
- make new friends
- learn something new
- and move their bodies in a fun, engaging way
It’s exactly what the Find Your Active: Move for Your Mind campaign celebrates, movement as a powerful tool for mental wellbeing.
For this club, the journey is only just beginning.
“The support from parents and players has truly been the foundation of our early success.”
With dedicated coaches, enthusiastic families and a growing community behind them, the future of grassroots roller hockey in Essex is looking incredibly bright. You can find out more about the club here and you can follow them on Instagram at @themightypucksroller.
