Sam King’s Journey Through 74 Ultramarathons

Active Essex

Sometimes, the most powerful changes in our lives start with a single step, or in this case, 74 ultra-marathons. For Sam King, movement became more than just a way to stay active; it became a way to process grief, overcome personal challenges, and reconnect with what matters most. His story is a reminder that finding your own way to move, whether it’s a walk, a run, or something else entirely, can support your wellbeing in a number of ways, but can also be a great way to give back as well.

A Tribute Through Movement

Sam King, 31, from Tendring, Essex has taken on the tremendous challenge of running 74 ultramarathons in 74 days. Why such a big challenge? Earlier, this year, Sam’s mum fell seriously ill, which resulted in Sam leaving his job and moving back home. He committed to a challenge in her honour: 74 ultramarathons in 74 days, one for every year of her life before she became unwell.

“There’s a greater purpose behind this challenge – it’s in honour of my Mum. One ultra for every year of her life, and to raise money for Headway.”

He has taken part in endurance running in the past. Since completing his first marathon in 2017, he’s taken part in multi-stage ultramarathons’ across deserts and mountain ranges around the world. However, although he has had years of physical training, the mental preparation for challenges like this has been just as important. He’s learned that while the body adapts with training, the mind requires a different kind of endurance.

“Physically, with the right approach to training and hard work it gets easier over time. I’m not sure long distance running ever gets any easier mentally, but the more you do it, the better you get at dealing with the mental challenges.”

Sam’s journey throughout this challenge is one of resilience. Around day 5, he suffered a painful foot injury. By day 26, he was hit with a sickness bug. And on day 27, he ran through a storm with 50mph wind, but he kept going!

“I’m convinced that if I’d stopped, both the injuries and illness wouldn’t have gone away so quickly. Our bodies and minds are incredibly powerful.”

Finding Purpose in Every Step

When asked what keeps Sam going through such a testing challenge like this, he explained that it’s for a greater purpose. Each run is a tribute to his mum, a step toward raising awareness, and a chance to inspire others.

“I want people to feel inspired… A few years ago, I was 19 stone and addicted to gaming. Now I’m running 74 ultramarathons in 74 days. If I can do it, anyone can.”

He is hopeful that his story can encourage young people to believe in themselves and take control of their lives and to appreciate the time they have with loved ones. Sam explained that only a few years ago he struggled with obesity and a gaming addiction. His transformation has been remarkable and now he is passionate about helping others do the same.

“I’d love to work with the government and organisations like parkrun or the London Marathon in the future to promote physical activity and better education around exercise.”

It’s an amazing ambition. With 1 in 3 people leaving school obese, the need for more inclusive opportunities to get active has never been greater.

Sams journey is a powerful example of how movement can support us through life’s hardest situations. Movement has helped him change his life for the better, overcome struggles, honour his mum, and inspire many others around him.

“Running is of course a massive part of my life and if I ever go out for a run, I always feel better for it afterwards. The power of exercise and just being outside in the fresh air and amongst nature is very strong and I think that everyone should do their best to get as much of it as possible. Even if it’s just a short walk every day as part of your routine.”

You don’t need to run ultramarathons to feel the benefits. As part of the Find Your Active: Move for Your Mind campaign, we’re reminded that movement, in any form, can be a tool for wellbeing. A short walk, a swim, a stretch, or a dance in your kitchen can all make a difference.
