When Shay first joined Cast A Thought’s HAF programme in the summer of 2024, his passion for fishing was evident. But beyond his love for the sport, it was his kindness, patience, and eagerness to support others that truly made an impact. From day one, Shay took it upon himself to help newcomers, teaching them how to untangle lines and unhook fish safely, ensuring they felt just as excited about fishing as he did.
Over time, his dedication grew, and so did his leadership. Shay expressed a desire to not just fish, but to guide others, stating, “I enjoy coming here fishing, but I would prefer some days just to help others.” His willingness to listen, learn, and then pass on that knowledge has made him an invaluable part of the Cast A Thought community.
Beyond his role in the HAF programme, Shay played a key role in creating Catchy Carpers, a monthly fishing session designed to help young people develop their skills beyond the holidays. Thanks to funding from Find Your Active, these sessions have become a space for growth, learning, and camaraderie—and Shay is always at the heart of them, supporting and encouraging others.
Despite living with Tourette’s, ASD, ADHD, and FND, Shay thrives when fishing, finding calm and confidence in the sport. He embodies resilience, passion, and leadership, proving that movement isn’t just about physical activity—it’s about community, support, and the joy of sharing what you love with others.
For these reasons, Shay has rightfully been named a #MoveWithUs ‘Move Maker’ for April.
