Essex United by Sport will help residents lead more active lives and improve access to physical activity.
A major new initiative has launched in Essex to help residents lead healthier lives. Essex United by Sport will bring together partners from across the county. Together they will use the power of sport to improve health and tackle inequalities.
Essex is home to world-class sporting facilities, elite teams and inspirational athletes. Essex United by Sport will build on these strengths to celebrate sporting achievements. It will bring people of all ages together and create opportunities to take part.
Essex United by Sport is powered by Essex County Council. It is delivered in partnership with Active Essex and their partners. Active Essex is the lead for sport and physical activity in Essex.
The programme will focus on:
- sport for all – ensuring every resident can engage in sport
- sport for communities – using sport to bring people together and strengthen local neighbourhoods
- sport for health – helping residents live longer, healthier and happier lives
- sport for the future – helping residents fulfil their potential and contributing to Essex’s economy.
While progress has been made, more than half a million adults in Essex still do not get the recommended 150 minutes of physical activity each week. This shows more needs to be done to help people get active.
Councillor Chris Hossack, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Residents and Communities said:
“Sport and physical activity have the power to improve lives, strengthen communities and create opportunities for people of all ages. Essex United by Sport will bring together partners from the sport, health, education, criminal justice and voluntary and community sector, to ensure more residents can access those benefits, regardless of their background, location or ability.
“From supporting healthier lifestyles and improving mental health, to developing skills and inspiring future generations, this programme will help unlock the full potential of sport across Essex.”
The programme was launched at the Essex Sport Arena, University of Essex, on Tuesday 3 November.
Pupils from Braiswick Primary School joined players and coaches for a basketball game. Guests heard from speakers representing the council, Sport England and the sporting community. Topics included the role Essex United by Sport will play in creating healthier, more connected communities.
Lewis Richardson, Olympic medallist and Essex athlete attended the launch, and said:
“Sport has given me opportunities, experiences and life skills that have shaped who I am today. Every young person should have the chance to experience those benefits, regardless of where they live or their background. Essex United by Sport is about creating those opportunities and inspiring the next generation to get active, build confidence and achieve their potential.”
