Watermans Swim School Rochford – Bringing a Community Together!

Active Essex

Waterman Primary Academy in Rochford have successfully launched a sustainable swim school for their local area. Providing affordable pool activities for families, children, schools and community groups is creating opportunities that will boost the health of families living in Rochford.

The Opening Schools Facilities (OSF) investment programme from the Department for Education (DfE) was the kick-start the project needed. Developments and continued growth of the project has resulted in a wide reaching school and community programme.

Watermans Swim School has enabled the school to take control of the swimming facility, opening it up to the community and families who are benefitting from these free session. Over 4 evenings per week, you will find various lessons taking place that encourage residents to get active through swimming.

Family swims and fun sessions have meant local families can spend more time together and collectively benefit from getting active in the pool. Swimming is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety as well as improve overall health and strength which can help residents of all ages lead healthier lifestyles.

New relationships are also formed during these sessions because children are able to make friends as well as the parents which can bring this community together and form a support system through the power of swimming!

The Head Teacher from Waterman Primary Academy told us;

“For a disadvantaged and highly vulnerable community this has provided such a range of experiences.”

Affordability can be a barrier for residents to maintain an active lifestyle and through community projects such as this, it delivers a free space to explore physical activity. Free to access community drop in sessions for both parents and young children provides an inclusive space for residents to get active whilst not having the worry of expense.

A parent who attends sessions said;

“I can’t express how amazing it is. The benefits of the swimming pool and such a wonderful teacher makes such a different to my children.”

Hopefully the success of projects such as this can result in replication in other areas to help Essex residents find their active in a safe, inclusive and familiar environment.
