This powerful video showcases specific examples of how physical activity has been given more priority in a variety of systems and organisations to ensure inactive people living in disadvantaged communities can enjoy the many benefits of an active lifestyle.

The LDP is an important strand of the work of Active Essex, leading the focus on tackling high levels of physical inactivity, particularly in the most disadvantaged areas of Essex. The Essex LDP is the only one in the East region and is focused on over 400,000 people who live in the county’s most disadvantaged areas, and where individuals and families are facing the greatest inequalities. 1 in 4 people in Essex are inactive, which rises to as much as 1 in 2 in our least affluent communities.

The LDP is joining forces with the physical activity and sport sector in Essex, Southend and Thurrock, in their ambitious strategy to create an active Essex to improve everyone’s health and wellbeing.

LDP Governance

The LDP governance is led by Active Essex and overseen by the Essex Health and Wellbeing Board, chaired by Cllr John Spence. Cllr Spence is also the Essex County Council cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Care. The LDP is supported by a Strategic Sponsors Group made up of representatives of Sport England and system leaders across Essex who are championing the work of the LDP and the value of physical activity to health and wellbeing. The Strategic Sponsors Group is also chaired by Cllr John Spence.

Implementation groups have been established in the three main test areas of Basildon, Colchester and Tendring made up of the key local stakeholders including local citizens. The implementation groups are responsible for creating a bespoke local LDP plan and for co-producing investment linked to the plan.
